New 411 m long extradosed stay cable bridge in the Republic of Palau

New Koror-Babeldoab Bridge in Koror, Palau Republic

The old Koror-Babeldoab Bridge was built in the late 1970's and represented an important structure in the Republic of Palau. The bridge connected the island of Koror, the nation's center of government and tourism, with Babeldoab, the nation's largest island. On Sept. 26, 1996, the 250 meter bridge collapsed and plummeted into the channel below.

Since then, a floating bridge was opened to service as the connection between the islands. In 2000, with a US$ 25 million funding from the Japanese government, Kajima Corporation demolished the temporary floating bridge and built a new landmark for Palau - an extradosed stay cable bridge.

In a cooperative effort by DSI USA (Business Unit Special Projects) and DSI Taiwan, DSI supplied the post-tensioning system and extradosed cable system. In addition, DSI provided start-up supervision and formtravellers for the free cantilever section of the bridge.

The project was successfully completed in October 2001.
